Raspberries, currants and strawberries are so yesterday - say hello to the aronia berry! This little berry has a lot going for it. Pea-sized and purple-black, it looks almost like the usual blueberry. With its taste, however, it appears somewhat bittery. In the truest sense of the word, because instead of being sweet, aronia berries taste rather tart and sour. But that's exactly why we love them as a great alternative to sweet strawberries, raspberries and the like! Convince yourself of the special fruit: Buy dried organic aronia berries in the 1 kg value pack in our online shop now!
Aronia berries – what are they?
First of all, let's get one misconception out of the way. Even if the name suggests it, the aronia berry - also known as chokeberry - is not a real berry at all. It belongs to the rose family and is actually a pome fruit. This becomes clear when you look at the inside of the berry. And where does this special fruit come from? The aronia berry originated in eastern North America, where it has been cultivated for centuries by the indigenous peoples. It only came to us about 100 years ago. Yet it is very easy to grow and even works in Germany, as the 2-3 metre tall and wide plant is very cold-resistant. In addition, the chokeberry is self-sufficient, so it can pollinate itself and is therefore very easy to care for. You can harvest and process chokeberries from August onwards. For those who do not have chokeberry in their garden, we are happy to do the work for you. We offer the pome fruit both dried and as aronia juice.
Careful with raw aronia berries!
Even if the fruits look delicious when you pick them, you should not eat them raw, because their seeds can contain toxic prussic acid. Although this is not harmful in small quantities, we recommend that you use processed aronia berries. These contain no more harmful substances due to the processing and also taste much better! This is also the reason why we dry the fresh berries. Before eating them, simply soak them in water - preferably overnight - until they have a soft consistency and they are ready for you to enjoy them.
