As long as cocoa grows on trees, chocolate is a fruit, that's fairly obvious! It might not be exactly like that, but the cocoa bean can do a lot more than just become chocolate. You will find several cocoa products in our shop, including organic cocoa nibs, organic cocoa butter, organic de-oiled cocoa powder and partly de-oiled cocoa powder. Our whole cocoa beans are not just great to process or for baking, they are also a great snack! Buy organic cocoa beans in the convenient 1 kg value pack now!

The cocoa factsheet: Production & processing

Cocoa was used for human consumption as early as 1000 BC. The origin of this probably lies in Central America. Cocoa beans are the seeds of the cocoa fruit. The yellowish, oval fruit grows at temperatures of around 30 °C on the cocoa tree - more precisely, on the trunk of the tree. When harvested, the fruit is taken from the tree with machetes and sickle sticks, then opened and stored for fermentation. This is necessary to ensure the desired flavour. The white beans also change their colour to brown here. During the fermentation process, it gets quite warm between the beans and the moist cocoa beans must then be placed in the sun again to dry. After drying - which can take several weeks - the beans are roasted. Then the beans are either sent to us at KoRo or perhaps to Charlie's chocolate factory, where the cocoa beans are crushed and ground. The grinding generates heat, the cocoa butter melts and the final cocoa mass can be processed into chocolate or cocoa powder. So you see, a lot has to happen before you can enjoy your hot cocoa or chocolate bar!

What can I do with whole cocoa beans?

Even the Aztecs knew that cocoa was the food of the gods and goddesses. It is not only the taste that is divine, but also the variety of uses. You can do more than just snack on our cocoa beans straight from the bag. We admit that the tart taste takes a little getting used to, but it can soothe your sweet tooth quite well. You can also eat sweet fruit with it or simply garnish your muesli with some cocoa. Have you ever made your own cocoa drink? Roast the beans in a pan and then separate the shell. Then just grind the beans and mix with a spoonful of sugar or spices of your choice to taste. Then pour in hot water, hot milk (or oat drink for the vegan version) and the delicious chocolate drink is ready. It's not only good for breakfast, but also tastes great before bedtime. You can make it even easier for yourself by simply ordering our cocoa powder in the online shop. You can find out more exciting facts in our blog entry about cocoa.

You can snack on our cocoa beans straight from the bag - you can eat the shell too. You can also add the tart beans to your muesli or porridge or snack together with dried fruit. You love hot cocoa? You can make your own drinking chocolate. For baking cakes, brownies, cookies and muffins as well as for preparing a delicious chocolate spread, we recommend our organic cocoa powder. It is best to talk to your doctor about this to be sure. From our point of view, cocoa beans should only be consumed in small quantities during pregnancy.
Yes! Our cocoa beans come from organic farming!
Our cocoa beans come from Peru. The yellowish, oval fruit grows at temperatures of around 30 °C on the trunk of the cacao tree. During harvesting, the fruit is taken from the tree with machetes and long sticks, then opened. Then it goes to fermentation to achieve the desired flavor. White beans now become brown beans. The cocoa beans, which are moist due to the fermentation, are finally dried in the sun before they come to the KoRo online store and wait for you.
Healthy is first and foremost a full and balanced diet. Our cocoa beans provide per 100 g 570 calories and 14 g protein. All information on nutritional values and ingredients can be found on the packaging of all our products and next to or below the product text in our online store.

Varieties & Origin

Criollo

Criollo cocoa is considered very noble and convinces with its intense and aromatic taste. Originally from Central America, it is also known as spiced cocoa because of its strong taste.

Cultivation by country in tons
Country Tons
Kamerun 250000
Elfenbeinküste 1964000

Indonesien 240000
Papua-Neuguinea 36000

Native to Central America, where it was already cultivated in the Mayan era, cocoa was for a very long time a delicacy accessible only to the upper classes. Later, from 19th century onwards, cocoa began to be cultivated intensively, so as to allow the whole world to enjoy its unique taste in many different variations. Ivory Coast is the world's leading cocoa producer, followed by Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Brazil and other countries. More than 5 million tons of cocoa are harvested each year worldwide. Did you know that about 50 cocoa beans are needed for a bar of chocolate?

Production

Hello, Order compliant. To note, error of the recording of delivery by your care not in conformity; what involves a date of delivery not respected and a multitude of steps of my share with the conveyor; however it was not the first order! F. Decoeyere

Our feedback: Hey Sabine, vielen Dank für Dein Feedback.
