Everything at a glance Freeze-dried red currant
A berry with many names: cassis, ribes, gooseberry, or simply currant, red currant reminds some of us of our childhood summers, when we would collect handfuls of it from wild plants, gladly filling our mouth with its peculiar sweet and sour taste, and thus fighting the heat. If you miss this feeling of summer and freedom, you are going to love our freeze-dried red currant, which you can now enjoy all year long! Moreover, thanks to the freeze-drying process, the taste of our berries is way more concentrated than that of their fresh counterparts – and their texture crunchier!
Freeze-dried red currant remains rich in vitamin C
Red currant is native of central Europe, where it grows very easily, and is packed with vitamins and nutrients. In terms of nutrient density, this tiny berry is in no way inferior to the popular superfoods acai and goji berries: the red currant bristles with vitamin C, which does not get lost in the process of freeze-drying. Our red currant is therefore a great and healthy alternative to chips. Snacking has never felt so good!
Very versitile in the kitchen
The gentle sourness of the currant is what makes it so unmistakably delicious, and it can transform a white yoghurt into an incredible sensory experience. You can also use red ribes to top up your smoothie bowl with taste and colour, or to bake fruity muffins and cakes – they can be also a great addition to savoury dishes, like a fresh and crunchy couscous salad.
What makes our freeze-dried red currant so special
Our red currant is harvested when ripe, which is why its taste is so strong, and then gently freeze-dried, so that almost all its vitamins and nutrients are left intact. We add no sugar nor preservatives to our ribes, as we want to bring to your door the ultimate, unadulterated berry experience. Albeit free from preservatives, these dried red berries do keep for very long; enjoy their summery, biting taste even in the middle of the winter! Last but not least: if you want a double dose of vitamine C, at KoRo you can find black currant as well.

What is the KoRo price chart?
In this chart, you can see the price per base unit (mainly 100g). In addition, you will learn the reason for a price reduction or increase by clicking on the information circles. -
Why is the price fluctuating?
Most annual product crops have an impact on the relationship between supply and demand in the market. In the event of a bad harvest, we must also pay a higher price for raw materials. Due to the strong impact of external factors such as wind, weather, climate and natural events on the harvest, we are refusing long-term cross-harvest contracts with our producers. -
Why are we communicating price changes at KoRo?
Open communication is very important to us and therefore part of our vision. For this reason, we would like to keep you informed of the evolution of our prices. Thus, the KoRo price chart provides a transparent overview of the evolution of the products prices over time.

Freeze-dried red currant - a look behind the scenes

Comfortable in Germany and its surrounding countries
Currants like the temperate climate of European countries. No wonder then that over 95% of the world's currant yield is harvested here. Poland, Hungary and Lithuania are among the largest growing areas worldwide, and we also get our berries from them.

Red currant's quick growth
Currant bushes grow very quickly, shortly after sowing. At the beginning of April, the plants start to cover themselves in green flowers that hang from the branches in clusters.

Wildly growing plants
When fully grown, the shrubs can reach heights of even 1.5 meters. With their thick branches and wild-looking leaves, some shrubs are almost currant trees!

Harvesting
Red currant is harvested in summer, normally around the end of June, while the black varieties are usually only ripe around August. The longer the currants hang on the bush, the sweeter they taste.

Washed and hand-picked
After being harvested, red currant is washed, and selected by hand in order to deliver only the best-quality berries directly to your door.

First shock-frozen, then directly to the vacuum room: this might not sound like a gentle process, but freeze-drying is one of the best options to preserve vitamins and nutrients intact. Moreover, as this procedure removes most of the berries' water, it enhances their taste and makes their texture crunchier. A real win-win situation!

After having been freeze-dried, the red currant is filled into large packs and shipped to our Berlin warehouse, where the fruits wait for you to order them.

Questions about questions Freeze-dried red currant
What is freeze-drying, and why do you use this process?
The delicate freeze-drying process uses the principle of sublimation to remove water from foods. Our fruits are frozen and successively placed in a vacuum room, where the water, due to the pressure, changes its state from ice directly into steam. Thus, our red berries get their crunchy texture, keep their nutrients intact, and have their taste enhanced!
How should I store the red currant to make it last longer?
Of course you want to know how to take care of your freeze-dried red currant, before buying half a kilo of it! Properly stored - which means well closed, and away from heat and direct light - our red currant keeps for up to one and a half years. You can use our airtight mason jars to store them not only efficiently but also prettily.
How many calories does red currant have?
100 g of our freeze-dried red currant have about 254 calories and 30 g of carbohydrates. All nutritional values are printed on the packaging.
How many types of currant there are, and how do they differ from one another?
When you think of currant, you probably picture black and red small berries that grow on wild bushes. But there is another, more uncommon type of currant - the white one! This leads to some crossbreeds like the pink and golden-coloured ribes, which are however pretty rare. Independently from their colour, currant types have a very similar, sweet-and-sour taste: red currant is generally slightly sweeter, while white currant can have a delicate wine-y aftertaste.

Great look
Great burst of color in cereal, tart sweet, crunchy, a little too "grainy" for me when eating.

This makes eating fun!
We love fruit. But especially in the cold season, variety is a must. Currants are a real taste sensation and spice up salads, soups and the morning cereal in terms of taste and appearance. The eye eats with you!
The currants taste similar to the fresh counterpart slightly sour.

Delicious, light berries. Also fit very well

How healthy puffed rice
Like almost all products from Koro an unbeatable kg price and speedy delivery. Have ordered the red currants for the first time and have expected a more intense taste. However, my husband and children prefer it to snack. They find it similar to puffed rice. From therefore I am absolutely satisfied to be able to offer such healthy things to them ❤️
