Almonds - nut or kernel?
In a world where peanuts are legumes and tomatoes are fruits, it's no longer surprising that almonds aren't officially nuts, they're kernels. The almond tree (Prunus dulcis) belongs to the rose family, but in botany the almonds are assigned to the drupes. And almonds have been cultivated for over 4000 years ,crazy isn't it? The almond has its origins in the eastern Mediterranean. Today they are mainly grown in America, southern and western Europe - mostly in California, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Australia and Chile.

These almonds are the largest almonds available on the market
Global almond production is led by California, with over 2/3 of global production; buy why? This is probably due to a combination of large cultivation areas, easy mechanical harvest, and comparably low wages. Also, unlike many other parts of the world, water is not a scarce commodity in California. After the USA as the front runner in almond production, we find Spain, Morocco, Iran and Turkey. A total of around 2.2 million tons of almonds are harvested worldwide every year!

At KoRo, we analyse the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the production of our snacks. These include, among other things, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. Our hard-working sustainability team collects all the information to calculate a value: the so-called CO2 equivalents. We are now passing this information on to you so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and keep an eye on your personal carbon footprint. We also use these valuable findings ourselves, to try to make our supply chains even smarter in the future and monitor our CO2 footprint.
CO₂ emissions by product
To make the work of our sustainability team easier, we have teamed up with the company Cozero. They support us with their decarbonisation software to calculate the CO2 emissions of our products. Our products go through a lot before they make their way into your pantry or snack bowl, so there is a lot to take into consideration: production, packaging, and logistics – to name just the big steps.

Much of the almond kernels are unfortunately very bitter and they are relatively soft, not really crunchy.
