Everything at a glance Black pepper grains 1 kg
If you are looking for tasty whole black pepper, you don’t have to go far at all, because we are bringing your pepper in a value pack of 1kg directly into your kitchen! The whole pepper grains come from the pepper plant, mostly cultivated in India, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brazil. The fruits of the plant are growing in little ears, with each of those ones that can hold up to 150 seeds. The colour of the seeds vary very much according to their level of ripeness: unripe, the pepper fruit looks quite green and when they are just about to turn orange, they are harvested and dried, which gives them their brown colour and wrinkly structure.
Pepper is unfolding its original slightly spicy and herby aroma best, when it is fresh ground. That’s why we only offer you whole black pepper grains, so that you can ground them at home and enjoy. A great addition to every vegetable, meat and fish, pepper adds that perfect kick to every savoury dish. This devil of a fellow is the perfect spicy allrounder!

Varieties and origins

Black Malabar pepper
The Malabar pepper is a very high quality pepper variety of the pepper (Piper nigrum) from the southwest of India - the Malabar Coast or the Pepper Coast. There, still green, unripe pepper berries are extracted and then dried under the sun. Recognizable by its greenish sheen, this high-quality pepper has a warm, intense aroma with a pleasant sharpness.
Black Sarawak pepper
Also Sarawak pepper is a variety of Piper nigrum, this time from Sarawak, a mountainous region of the island Borneo, which belongs to Malaysia. The unripe pepper berries are harvested when still green and then dried under the sun. The grains of Sarawak pepper are larger and comparatively mild with a fruity aroma and a nutty, slightly sweet taste. About 20% of Sarawak pepper is used to produce white pepper.
Black Tellicherry pepper
From the Indian province of Thalassery, Tellicherry pepper is another type of the Piper nigrum family. Harvested when still green and unripe, the pepper berries are dried under the sun. Next to Malabar pepper, Tellicherry is one of the finest types of pepper. The grains have a brownish colour and stand out, in terms of taste, thanks to their nutty, smoky aroma with a light citrus note.
Black Lampong pepper
Another variety of Piper nigrum, this pepper comes from Lampog, a region on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia. Harvested when still green and unripe, once dried the grains of Lampong pepper are smaller and of a greyish black. They have a dry and spicy taste and are considered to be one of the spiciest Southeast Asian peppers.
Black Kampot pepper
The Kampot pepper is a highly controlled and high quality pepper variety that comes from the provinces of Kampot and Kep in Cambodia. There it is obtained from the still green, unripe pepper berries, which are then dried under the sun. The peppercorns are of a beautiful deep black and have an exceptionally fruity and intense taste with notes of mint and eucalyptus. A large part of this type of pepper is also used to make red and white pepper.
Black Phu Quoc pepper
From the Phu Quoc island in Vietnam, the berries of this pepper type are harvested when still green and unripe, and then dried under the sun. The grains are very large and have a black-brown colour with a greyish tinge. With an aromatic, slightly citrus-like taste, Vietnamese pepper is among the milder varieties. At KoRo, we have this pepper in our selection.
Black Belem pepper
Cultivated in the Brazilian Amazon., the grains of Belem pepper are very large and less wrinkled than those of other types of pepper. Characterized by a play of colours in different shades of brown and black, this variety of pepper is not particularly spicy, has an aromatic, fruity taste with an earthy, resinous note. You can buy this pepper at KoRo.
Coarsely ground black pepper
The black peppercorns are gently dried, causing the volatile essential oils to dissipate faster, and the pepper to taste less strong.
Ground black pepper
Also ground pepper comes from gently dried black peppercorns, which have thus lost their volatile essential oils
Originally, pepper comes from the South Indian Malabar Coast in India, and, about 1000 years ago, pepper cultivation arrived to Indonesia and Malaysia, spreading further from there. Today, Vietnam is the main exporter of pepper due to strong regulations. In 2017, a total of about 690 tons of pepper (piper nigrum) were produced worldwide.

What is the KoRo price chart?
In this chart, you can see the price per base unit (mainly 100g). In addition, you will learn the reason for a price reduction or increase by clicking on the information circles. -
Why is the price fluctuating?
Most annual product crops have an impact on the relationship between supply and demand in the market. In the event of a bad harvest, we must also pay a higher price for raw materials. Due to the strong impact of external factors such as wind, weather, climate and natural events on the harvest, we are refusing long-term cross-harvest contracts with our producers. -
Why are we communicating price changes at KoRo?
Open communication is very important to us and therefore part of our vision. For this reason, we would like to keep you informed of the evolution of our prices. Thus, the KoRo price chart provides a transparent overview of the evolution of the products prices over time.

A critical customer says

I'm fine! As described!
but nothing is fine!
This is the worst pepper in a long time. Grain sizes and colours are VERY different. In terms of colour, there is just about everything from grey to black. Pepper is also nothing special in terms of taste: it is mainly hot, without any other nuances - such as fruity, for example
PS: the packaging did NOT contain an expiry date!
