Sushi: what is that?

Sushi are small, Japanese rice bites rolled in nori seaweed and served with various toppings, most commonly fish. There are different types of sushi, and we would like to introduce you to the most delicious ones: Makis are probably the best known form. They are rolled by hand in a bamboo mat, and the nori sheet can be rolled on the outside or inside. Futo-maki is the larger version of maki. Inside-out rolls or California rolls have vegetables and fish wrapped directly in the nori sheet, while the rice is on the outside and is often coated with sesame seeds . Nigiris are a form of sushi in which a narrow rice ball is topped with ingredients of choice. Sometimes this is wrapped with a nori strip for better grip. Onigiri are formed into round or triangular rice balls, which in turn are filled with delicious ingredients and traditionally wrapped with seaweed leaves. Classically, sushi is served with soy sauce, wasabi and ginger (gari). If you want to make sushi yourself, you will need our accessory set as well as sushi rice, rice vinegar, nori leaves and other fresh ingredients to fill and top your sushi. If you like to have all the gadgets and want to look like a real pro, we recommend a rice cooker.

How to make sushi at home

Our sushi making kit will turn any beginner into a sushi master — the sushi restaurant next door will be green with envy. You already know the ingredients you need, so let's get to it. The spoon is used for combining the rice and vinegar and the rice spreader — as the name suggests — is used for spreading the rice. Now it's time to get down to business: To make nigiris and onigiris, open the sushi moulds and fill them with sticky rice. Then top them with the (vegetarian) ingredients of your choice. You can use fresh salmon, eel, prawns or tuna, tofu, avocado, omelette, cucumber, peppers or anything else you can think of. With the onigiris, you add another load of rice on top. You can even make sweet sushi by using rice pudding as a base, topping it with fruit and using a little maple syrup instead of soy sauce. Maki is a little more elaborate. To make it, place nori seaweed leaves on your bamboo mat, spread rice on top (tip: leave about two centimetres of space around the edge!) and press the rice down with your fingers. Moisten your hands with a little vinegar water beforehand. Now you can place your toppings, ideally cut into an oblong, "sushi-friendly" shape, on the rice. To roll up your sushi mat, lift it a little at the bottom and roll everything up with light pressure. Finally, cut the roll into bite-sized pieces. We recommend using a sharp knife for this. The best thing is that with our starter box you can organise a delicious evening together with your friends, where everyone has something to do: One chops the vegetables and fish, the other cooks the rice, one fills the ramekins and the other sets the table, fills the soy sauce into nice serving bowls and offers the others some wasabi peanuts to nibble on.
