Red lentils dal

Vegan Indian cuisine? Yes, please!

Red lentils dal


  • small onion : 1 piece
  • Garlic : 2 cloves
  • ginger : 1 small piece
  • oil or vegan butter: 1 tbsp.
  • turmeric: 0.5 tsp
  • cumin: 0.5 tsp.
  • paprika powder: 0.5 tsp.
  • Garam Masala: 0.25 tsp
  • vegetable broth: 350 ml
  • red lentils: 150 g
  • coconut milk: 125 ml
  • salt and pepper:
  • for the toppping:
  • fresh parsley: to taste
  • cashew nuts: to taste


Step 1

Peel onions, garlic and ginger and chop very finely.

Step 2

Heat the oil or butter in a saucepan or frying pan and add the onions, garlic and ginger along with the spices. Sweat everything together for about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Pour in the vegetable broth and lentils, bring to a boil and then reduce the heat. Simmer the whole thing for about 15-20 minutes.

Step 4

Once the lentils have absorbed most of the liquid, stir in the coconut milk. -At the end, season with salt, pepper and lemon juice, season to taste and then simmer for another 10 minutes. At the end, the lentils should be soft or slightly firm to the bite, depending on your taste. Add more water or coconut milk if necessary.

Step 5

Garnish with parsley or cashews if desired.

Step 6

The lentil dal goes well with freshly baked naan bread, rice or simply enjoy plain.
