If a whole year is named after you, you know that you are something special! Congratulations to quinoa, because the pseudo-cereal was a recipient of this honour. The former UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon declared 2013 the "international year of quinoa", urging people around the world to learn more about the plant's potential.

Quinoa - what is it?

Like amaranth, this ancient crop belongs to the foxtail family and has been cultivated in the highlands of the Andes for more than 5,000 years, where it is considered a staple food. After their arrival, the Spanish colonialists regarded the so-called South American "Inca wheat" primarily as food for the lower classes, which is why it was virtually unknown in Europe until a few decades ago. Luckily, these times are over, and the hype around quinoa has become enormous, and for a good reason! Quinoa is not only a great energy supplier with a mild-nutty taste. It has many other advantages: quinoa is a pseudo-cereal (quinoa is actually a seed), making it gluten-free. This makes it a great side dish alternative to bulgur or couscous.

Cooking quinoa: preparation and recipes

Have you had enough of rice and potatoes? Quinoa is a great alternative for all types of savoury, but also sweet dishes. You can integrate it into any meal of the day, for example: enjoy some puffed quinoa with fruit, nuts and some agave syrup in your breakfast muesli. At lunch, make a quinoa bowl with smoked tofu from our Food Journal, and in the evening, serve it alongside a burger or fill a roasted pepper with quinoa and vegetables! Quinoa is simply perfect to fill you up and never get fed up with!

Preparing quinoa could not be easier:

  1. Rinse thoroughly in a colander.
  2. Bring quinoa to a boil with double the amount of water and a pinch of salt, then reduce heat to medium and let cook for about 15 minutes.
  3. Done! When the water has evaporated (the quinoa should have some bite to it), you can serve the pseudo-cereal. Bon appétit!

Questions & answers: Organic white quinoa 25kg

Quinoa belongs to the group of so-called "pseudocereals" and is therefore naturally gluten-free. However, since quinoa comes into contact in the processing process with machines that also process other gluten-containing foods, traces of gluten may be present. People with celiac disease or a gluten intolerance must therefore unfortunately keep their hands off our organic quinoa.
White quinoa is the most common and is usually cheaper than other varieties. It is rather nutty in taste. Black quinoa tastes quite similar, but is a bit more al dente and has a minimally longer cooking time. Red quinoa, much like the black version, takes a little longer to cook. Because it holds its shape and looks pretty, you're best off using it as a highlight for salads. Puffed quinoa is also known as the popcorn of the Incas and looks great in your breakfast.
Quinoa has a nutty, mild flavor that is more than welcome in a variety of dishes.
Yes, our quinoa comes from organic farming.
Quinoa is a pseudocereal. This means that it is often classified as a cereal, but strictly speaking it belongs to the seeds. Quinoa belongs to the foxtail family and is native to South America, where the plant is grown along the Andes. The Inca wheat is a great alternative to conventional grains and extremely tasty prepared both savory and sweet.
Quinoa is a source of protein with 13 g protein per 100 g. In addition, it has a high fiber content. The exact nutritional values can be found in the table next to or below the product description.
To prepare quinoa is very simple: wash the seeds in a sieve with hot water to lose the slightly bitter aftertaste. Then boil briefly with twice the amount of water and a pinch of salt, and then simmer on medium heat for about 20-25 minutes. Chef's kiss, you're done! Once the water has boiled away (your quinoa should be minimally al dente), you're ready to serve the pseudo-grain. Enjoy your meal!
Unlike couscous and bulgur, quinoa is not a wheat product. Quinoa is actually a seed! In addition, the pseudo cereal is perfect if you have eaten your fill of rice and Co. but do not want to give up your carbs! <3
The question is rather, which recipe you can NOT prepare with quinoa? Whether for breakfast as porridge, at lunch in a superfood salad or your tofu bowl or in the evening as a side dish for your curry - quinoa is perfect for sweet and savory dishes. You can find the full load of recipes in our Food Journal.

White quinoa

Nowadays, white quinoa is the most common variety. Thanks to its gentle nutty taste, this grain can be combined with both savoury and sweet dishes.

In 2018, more than 250,000 tons of quinoa were produced worldwide, and the market for quinoa is constantly growing. 95% of global production comes from Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. The quinoa grain originates from the Andes, and it was a staple food of the Incas. Quinoa belongs to the Amaranthaceae family and is therefore gluten-free. Moreover, this pseudo grain is rich in protein, as well as unsaturated fatty acids and minerals.

Voller Steine

Schade

Unfortunately a lot of stones in the quinoa

Unfortunately, my last bag of white quinoa had a lot of little stones in between, which you can't sift out because they are the same size as the quinoa grains. Unfortunately, this made it impossible to eat :(.

The most disgusting quinoa I have ever tasted!

I am an avid quinoa eater and decided to buy 4x2kg packages of the "White Organic Quinoa 2 kg" right away. Unfortunately, after preparing my first serving, I deeply regret the bulk purchase, because it was the most disgusting quiona I have ever tasted. Even while washing it, I noticed how much dirtier it got, even after a full day of soaking and changing the water five times. After boiling, I still couldn't get rid of the strong underlying taste, which is extremely unpleasant. Since I was planning to make a quinoa salad for a party, I decided to set that batch aside and made a new batch of quinoa that I bought at Kaufland. This one was much cleaner and tasted exactly like I expect quinoa to taste. After trying both quinoas side by side, I can say that this product is truly disgusting and I do not recommend you buy it.... Maybe I got a bad pack.... But hey, I still have 7kg of quinoa to test :(

I like quinoa, but red quinoa has more properties than white quinoa.

White quinoa is very good, but I like red quinoa better, which has been around for a long time.

Quinoa instead of rice - can always be used

Quinoa as it must be, and a lot of it.... I usually replace the rice with it, simply because it contains all the essential amino acids and makes the body happy. But you can also stir it cold into the muesli ;)
